Under 13 Port/South Melb - Div 3 SMD 3.7(25) def by Mordi-Braeside 10.11 (71)

Goal Kickers George (2) & Lachlan
Best Players Lachlan, Will, Jason, Connor, Tyrone, George

Match Day Awards Lachlan, Will, Jason

Undermanned with just 15 players the team showed heaps of character and the final score didn’t really reflect how close the game actually was. The 1st quarter saw us kicking into the wind and only for a couple of cheap late goals did the opposition win the quarter with the scores 1.2 to 3 straight goals. An even 2nd quarter saw the half time scores 2.3 to 5.3 with George snagging both our majors. We let yourselves down a little in the 3rd quarter in that we tried to play our positions rather than manning up, the opposition were getting numbers behind the ball and running in waves down the ground. We failed to score for the quarter and we were down 2.3 to 9.10 at the last break. Still down a player on the field the boys dug deep to win the last quarter by 3 points 1.4 to 1.1. A terrific team effort, it would have been easy to drop our heads 15 players to 20, but the boys played one of their best games for the season.

Port / South Melbourne 2.8 (20) lost to Highett/Cheltenham 6.8 (44)

In windy conditions our captain for the day, Matthew Nolan won the toss and elected to kick with the wind. An evencontestinthefirstquartersawusup1.7to1.2atthe1stbreak.Thewindwasmakingitverydifficultforour boys to gather the ball and when they did we kicked poorly in the wind.

We failed to score into the wind in the 2nd & last quarters and with only another 1.1 in the 3rd quarter we couldn’t challenge our opposition. Highett/Cheltenham had too many winners across the ground and handled the windy conditions much better than we did. Overall a disappointing game for us.

Port / South Melbourne 4.10 (34) def Hampton 4.4 (28)

We started with the stiff southeasterly after our captain Angus playing his 50th game won the toss. We didn’t use the wind well and too many times got stuck in the ‘dead pocket’, resulting into behinds. A late goal to Marcus from a lovely set shot saved the quarter for us.

At quarter time we reinforced our number one goal for the day - numbers defensive side of every contest. To the boys credit they worked their butts off in the second quarter, our system was working and we managed to break the lines a few times for a goal into the wind. Our opposition managed a goal with the wind (as we did in the first) so half time saw us over a goal up.

The sleeting rain came in the 3rd quarter and the best place to be was on the bench under cover. We managed to snag another goal (as did Hampton into the wind) and with the number of behinds kicked with the wind, we held a 2 goal advantage for most of the remainder of the game. 4th quarter saw us working hard into the wind again and kicking another goal to match our opposition’s goal. A late goal to Hampton saw the margin narrow, but our boys weren’t going to let this game slip. Well done boys on a fine effort & game, the song was belted out in the rooms when we finally could get into them.

U13 Div 4

The game at Oval 9 began with the threat of some mid-afternoon showers so it was important to win the toss, which we did, and kick with the wind towards the St Kilda end. The boys immediately clicked into gear with commitment for the ball and having most of the play. Our midfield was strong. Jason, who stepped up to play in the Centre, was great getting in and under the contest. Ryan got plenty of kicks out of the middle and played well all day. Ollie was working tirelessly in the ruck and continued to give his all when rotated forward. We were holding position and playing our roles. Exactly what we asked of the team.

It wasn’t a high scoring match as it was an arm wrestle struggle all day between both teams from end to end. Our ferocity at the ball and desire to win the contest was clearly evident. In addition, there were great passages of linking football in every quarter. Oscar was outstanding when switched in to the ruck. Mitch kicked a couple as goal sneak in the pocket and looked dangerous each time it came near him. Max and Lucas provided plenty of run today and executed their roles brilliantly. Luke was doing a fantastic job holding down CHB in the last half and playing his role. All across the ground I could see work rate, endeavour and contribution.

With just on 3 minutes to go we were one point up. Too much time left to shut the game down as we had to score to secure the victory. With the ball on the wing for what seemed an eternity they threw everything at us and ended up scoring. The momentum had swung to the opposition.

Great game of footy. Plenty of opportunity today for all the boys and a great team effort. Hold your heads high. Hope you had fun lads. Pick yourself up and get ready for next week.

Well done to our 50 gamers today, Ryan, Jackson, Mitchell and Bronx.

Port / South Melbourne 18 DEF St Pauls McKinnon 12

Goal Kickers: Seb D, Jake T

Match Day Awards: Dylan, Chris, Lucas

Great to have footy back on a beautiful autumn afternoon up against our nemesis, St Pauls McKinnon. In the past couple of years they have dominated us but not anymore. We matched their aggression and controlled the early play but unfortunately couldn’t get full reward on the scoreboard. Our tackling pressure was a real highlight and we were also able to move the ball with wonderful precision setting up goal scoring opportunities. As a consequence we managed 1.3 in the 1st Q and held the opposition scoreless.

In the 2nd Q we maintained the momentum although SPK did threaten. Our defence held up stoutly and going in the long break we extended our lead to 13 points.

Unfortunately a few goal scoring opportunities went begging in a goalless 3rd Q but we were able to extend the lead further to 14 points at the final change.

SPK threw everything at the boys in the final term. The game was played mainly in our back 50 with our boys out on their feet. SPK threatened kicking 1.3 and bringing the margin back to 6 points with 5 minutes to go but the boys dug in for the fight and outlasted the opposition. A great victory.

Congratulations to every player on a fantastic performance.
